A lot has happened since my last post: Google bought YouTube for a cool 1.65 billion, social networking got even bigger, I've been to Mozambique, Namibia, Paris and New York.
Interactive is really hotting up and the growth will continue to be huge this year. One of the biggest global growth areas will be video. Not TV, but online video. As the (1st) world moves to true high speed internet, video online becomes a lot more mainstream.
In South Africa however the reality is still quite bleak, thanks Telkom and Government. However, interestingly enough there is a small portion of people online who do have broadband. These are in most cases the trendsetters.... Yesterday's geeks made today's cool kids.
Social networking will continue to flourish and in SA we are seeing this picking up in a big way. I will share some of the campaigns we've worked on in the coming weeks where social networking has played a vital role in the success of campaigns.
Another big trend in SA... If you are looking to target 25-35 year olds on TV, well good luck. Most of us already have the latest series of Lost, Desperate Housewives, Prison Break, Grey's, Heroes... you name it, already seen it, without the annoying ads. As they flight in the US we conveniently receive them the next day. No more waiting 6 months for DStv to catch up.
In '07 the clever brands will talk to less people a lot better rather than trying to shout at the passing crowds.
It's going to be an interesting ride... hop on board!
