I think the whole of SA has gone Facebook mad in the last 3 months.
In the last few days I have received approximately 15 friend requests. The SA Network has currently around 24,000 people, and this seems to be growing by about 3,000 every 5 days or so. Who knows how many SA people are actually on it that is not in the SA network...
Our media partner tells me that MySpace has over 500,000 South Africans on it.
Ultimately I think in about a year's time (or less) Facebook will be more popular than MySpace. It definitely is the current hot thing.
Why?
Facebook makes it really simple to add friends which makes its growth exponential.
Facebook is clean, simple to use and doesn't chug bandwidth like a 10 ton truck that hasn't been serviced in 5 years.
There is less spam and harassment on Facebook (for now)
Facebook originally started as a college networking site where u could only join if u had a US college address. Now it's open to everyone.
If you aren't on it yet, get it and I guarantee you someone you know will start sending you friend invites without you even telling them.
Its actually quite crazy considering that the concept is really so basic. The concept of Facebook is not rocket science really. At the end of the day its a Harvard drop out in his early twenties who created the site, and if I may add was recently offered $1 billion for the site but turned the offer down. Good move.
