Internet at the hotel is scarce. I can only get on real early in the morning. I feel like I'm being forced to play an Alternate Reality Game where the internet is no longer available.... wait, or is that reality?
One of the most animated, funniest and interesting panel discussions I went to was lead by Justin Hall and Merci Victoria Grace from Gamelayers.
They have created PMOG (Passive Multiplayer Online Game) also known as a Casual Multiplayer Online Game.
Their game, currently in beta, is a firefox plug-in that runs as a toolbar at the bottom of your browser.
As you surf the web you are awarded points for visiting websites. You can leave hidden gifts for other players who might visit the same page. Or even place mines that'll blow up when they get there and detract points from their score.
Want to mess with someone, send them through a porthole where they have no idea where they will end up.
Think of it as World of Warcraft mixed with Stumbleupon, but there are no graphics and you don't have to wait for players to play at the same time as you. It's completely asynchronis.
You can also collect certain badges for completing missions and create your own missions.
Here is a mission that a player created around hybrid cars.
These type of games are interesting because they use data in a fresh and unique way. It's something you are doing already so why not have fun with it.
By participating you get to experience sites and places online that you might not have known existed, all within this fantasy world.
There are a few more of these type of games in the pipeline.
Where will this go? Imagine combining your internet location with your physical location and turning that into a game.
Other opportunities include website battles, e.g. nike.com vs reebok.com kinda like blue vs red in Halo. Check out Webwars for this.
